The Leaf Thief Squirrel

The Leaf Thief Squirrel

"The Leaf Thief" by Alice Hemming is that most adorable book. Your child will love reading about squirrel who loves all the colorful leaves on his tree. As they begin to disappear, he is trying to find out who is stealing all the leaves. This is a perfect book to read this fall and can be used to discuss what happens each season to trees and leaves.

Kids will fall in love with squirrel and will love to recreate him. This craft is a simple one and kids will love running around, pretending to collect leaves just like squirrel does in the book. They can use the squirrel they created to retell the story to others.

To make squirrel begin by printing out the pieces or tracing them onto construction paper.

Print and cut out the pieces of the squirrel.

Next, you will need a piece of brown construction paper. Fold the paper in half lengthwise, a hot dog fold. Then, cut on the fold to create 2 pieces.

Roll the piece of brown paper into a tube. Glue or staple the end together, this will be the body of the squirrel. If you use glue, give some time for the glue to dry.

Now, cut out all the pieces of the squirrel. Now you will attach the tail to the back of the body. Again you can do this with a stapler or glue.

To make the face, you can use a pre drawn face or create your own. To make the face, first glue the eyes to the face. After, turn the paper sideways and draw a capital D to make the nose. Color in the capital D and add lines on the side for whiskers. Finally, add a mouth by drawing and coloring in an oval shape.

Then, you will glue the face to the front of the tube. Press it gently to make sure it sticks.

Now, you will gather some leaves just like squirrel did in the book. You can print out the leaves in any fall color. Cut out the leaves and glue them to the middle of the body.

The hands are last to be attached. Glue them on the side of the leaves like squirrel is holding them.
